This Tuesday (12), when speaking at the 2024 United Nations Conference on Climate Change (COP 29), which takes place in Baku, Azerbaijan, the Minister of Environment and Climate Change, Marina Silva, demanded funding for advancing the climate agenda.

“In addition to the various themes presented here, of course, there are the financing mechanisms, without which what we announce will become just words […] Without the means of implementation, it will not be possible to take these proposals out of theory and put them into practice”, said the minister.

“And that’s what developing countries need. This is what developed countries need, so that we can deal with a process that is already a reality”, he added.

Marina is part of the delegation that is under the leadership of the vice-president and minister of Development, Industry, Commerce and Services (MDIC), Geraldo Alckmin.

When speaking at the event, Alckmin reinforced Brazil’s commitment to reducing emissions of so-called greenhouse gases by 59% to 67% by 2035. The target was announced by the Lula government last week.

“We are aware and committed that there is only a future if it is sustainable […] The success of COP 29 is fundamental to the success of COP 30”, said Alckmin.

COP 30

The 30th Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP 30), in Belém do Pará, next year.

“We are implementing the Climate Plan, which will serve as a guide for Brazilian climate policy until 2035. We also signed the Pact for Ecological Transformation, between the three powers of the Brazilian State, for the implementation of which the participation of civil society is essential. We need concrete measures and at the necessary pace”, highlighted the vice-president.

“Brazil has a methodology that affects all gases, it is a methodology that extends to all sectors, such as transport, industry, agriculture and also deforestation. And this is how we are going to achieve our NDC, which is highly ambitious, as President Lula said, we want to lead by example”, he added.
