Nutmeg belongs to the same family as the popular balcony geraniums. It has quite a lot of medicinal properties. We will advise you on how it can help us, how to care for it and how to protect it from death.

Nutmeg intoxicating

Nutmeg intoxicating (Pelargonium graveolens) comes from southern Africa. It reached Europe in the 1930s. In our climate, it is mainly grown in pots. The plant has a slightly upright habit and grows to a height of 1 m in a container. It has light green, deeply cut leaves with a hairy surface. It blooms rarely at home, producing small, pale pink flowers similar in appearance to other geraniums. Its characteristic feature is the smell – fresh, lemon-fruity with a distinct pink touch.

Intoxicating nutmeg – how to care for it?

Growing geraniums is not difficult – even someone who thinks they have no experience with plants can handle it.

Place

Like most geraniums, geraniums prefer a sunny location. Where to put nutmeg? If you want to grow it indoors, leave it on windowsills on the east or west side. When it’s warmer, you can place it outside. In colder seasons, move the pots to a bright room with a temperature not lower than 5 °C and not higher than 10 °C (staircases, garages, built-in verandas). In these conditions, the narcotic geranium will be able to go into a state of rest so that it can grow again in the following season.

Substrate

A suitable substrate for narcotic geraniums is a universal, permeable, compost soil with a neutral or slightly alkaline reaction.

Pruning and watering

Systematic watering is important – water it abundantly only when the soil in the pot dries out.

Fertilization

Avoid fertilizing geraniums during the winter season. During the plant’s growth period, it is good to fertilize geraniums with fertilizers for geraniums or multi-component fertilizers for pots.
