The mysterious nut tree brings bad luck and death
Cracking the nuts and removing the kernels is a job that takes a while. The result is not only a pile of nuts that taste wonderful and will therefore also be suitable for Christmas cookies, but they are also extremely healthy fruits.
Today, therefore, we look at nuts, and especially walnuts, as an extremely nutritious delicacy or superfood with a high content of protein, but also omega-3 fatty acids. Walnuts resemble the brain in appearance, and consumption also improves brain processes and contributes to health.
Although walnuts were famous for being healthy and definitely included in the diet of our ancestors, the tree was also often talked about in connection with dark forces. You may remember that another magically entwined tree is the black elder. But he used to land near the building to protect it. The walnut tree, on the other hand, was said to attract dark forces and have a negative effect on those around it.
It was even believed that the proximity of a walnut tree is responsible for quarrels in the family or illness. Although the tree was considered a source of strength, it was thought to be responsible for the mental discomfort of those living near it. Therefore, he should not only stand for physical illness, but also for depression and mental hardship. In art, the walnut tree is often a symbol of unhappy love and melancholy.
Although in the end it was a source of high-quality hardwood and also a number of nutritious nuts every year, the massive walnut tree, which often lived for hundreds of years, shaded and also took away nutrients from its surroundings. This also made the plants less resistant and easily susceptible to pests and diseases. Maybe that’s why he was considered dark and even evil. Even its leaves do not decompose and cannot be easily used in compost.
Dark lines of walnut, or juglon
It was also said that if the walnut tree does not bear fruit, the one who planted it will die. Even the fact that witches or devils crawl under the tree. Although it would be difficult to find an explanation for such a superstition, there is a grain of truth in the others. The tree produces a substance called juglone, which is slightly toxic and thus affects the growth of surrounding plants. Juglone is a natural brown-orange dye found in the walnut tree and has various uses.
In addition to ink or dyeing fabrics, it is used as a herbicide. This is because it has so-called allelopathic effects and has a direct negative effect on the greenery in its vicinity, which is evident, for example, in tomatoes or apple trees. Therefore, if you place the beds next to the walnut tree, there is a good chance that you will not harvest anything from your garden, and this can be a big regret.
So it is not surprising that our ancestors were afraid of the walnut tree. However, today scientists are more interested in how the natural effects of juglone could be used to our advantage. These are, for example, studies that focus on the use of juglone against various pathogens, but also cancer growth.
