Congressman had already said in 2022 that he would not run for another term; did not rule out the possibility of running for other elected positions

The senator (PT-RS) confirmed this Monday (11.Nov.2024) that he will not be a candidate for the Senate in 2026. The decision was communicated in a meeting with members of the PT (Workers’ Party) from Rio Grande do Sul.

The congressman had already said in 2022 that he would not run for another term. At the time, when asked why, he said it was necessary to “renewal in politics”. However, he did not rule out the possibility of running for other positions.

“We never stop. There’s no way to stop. I intend to pass on my baton, but I will always be active, watching and welcoming those who are arriving. I am here to serve my country and the Brazilian people”said the senator at the time.

Paim has more than 40 years of political life. The 74-year-old senator was a federal deputy 4 times and is in his 3rd term as senator. He participated in the drafting of the 1988 Constitution.

For the remainder of his term, he said he will “work to build more opportunities for black people to enter power”.

During the meeting, the senator also reinforced his defense of Public Pensions and workers’ rights. The congressman was responsible for reporting on the minimum wage policy.
