LISBON – The Prime Minister of Portugal, Luís Montenegro, announced this Monday (11) the development of a version of ChatGPT adapted to European Portuguese, scheduled for launch in the first quarter of 2025. The objective is to adjust artificial intelligence to better understand the linguistic and cultural specificities of Portugal, including vocabulary, idiomatic expressions and local references. The news was announced during the opening of the Web Summit 2024, taking place in Lisbon.
This version of ChatGPT will be designed to recognize the nuances of European Portuguese, offering a user experience more aligned with the Portuguese audience. The idea is that the tool, when interacting with users in Portugal, has more natural communication and avoids interference from other variants of the Portuguese language, such as Brazilian.
To develop this project, the Portuguese government intends to establish partnerships with universities and technology companies specializing in artificial intelligence and natural language processing. These collaborations are seen as fundamental to ensuring that the chatbot accurately understands and uses the vocabulary and grammatical constructions specific to Portuguese in Portugal.

The initiative is part of a larger effort to boost the digital economy in Portugal and strengthen the use of new technologies in the country. The government hopes that this customized version of ChatGPT can be useful in areas such as customer service, education and public administration, benefiting both companies and Portuguese citizens by adapting the AI to their needs and local context.
