Reducing 67% of emissions is a “bold but doable” goal

In Baku, Azerbaijan, the vice president announces zero deforestation and forest replacement goals

The vice-president (PSB) spoke this Tuesday (12.Nov.2024) as the representative of Brazil at the (29th United Nations Conference on Climate Change), held in Baku, capital of Azerbaijan. During his speech, he stated that the Brazilian government’s target is to reduce the amount by 2035, compared to 2005.

“We talk about a goal in 11 years. It’s bold, but it needs to be doable. Brazil has the largest tropical forest in the world”Alckmin told journalists.

The vice president declared that the federal government is committed to the objective of achieving zero deforestation, in addition to working on forest replacement. The measures take place with the support of the Climate Fund and the Amazon Fund.

“The success of COP29 is fundamental to the success of COP30, which we will be proud to host in Belém. Failure to do so now will cost a lot later”these.

He ended his participation with an invitation to the next meeting in Brazil: “In the name of President Lula: I hope to see you next year in Brazil (in Portuguese, I hope to see you next year in Brazil)”.

COP29

COP29 brings together 195 signatory countries to the Paris Agreement, with the aim of discussing complementary terms and advancing the 2015 text.

One of the central themes of the event has been the end of the use of fossil fuels and the transition to renewable energy, a banner defended by the new Lula government.
