Using the services of a nanny is a solution often chosen by parents who need free time or help looking after their children.
Finding a reliable nanny is often the most difficult task, but it’s always important to let her know what the rules are for looking after your children.
For one nanny, her work with children turned sour when, after one “incident”, the children’s mother began to demand payment of moral compensation.
The babysitter took to the Reddit community to ask how to deal with this stressful situation.
The 19-year-old nanny looked after children for two years and had experience working with various families. The new family hired her to look after their 9-year-old son and 7-year-old daughter. The children behaved well, which made the babysitter’s job much easier.
To reward the children for their good behavior, the nanny offered to buy them a Happy Meal with roast chicken. However, she did not know that the children were vegetarians because their mother did not tell her about it. Her previous childcare experience taught her to respect families’ eating habits.
When the children’s mother unexpectedly returned home to find the children eating chicken, she became furious. She accused the babysitter of causing great emotional harm to the children and demanded $600 in moral compensation.
Despite the mother’s threats, the babysitter refused to pay the “fine”, arguing that it was the mother’s responsibility to report any dietary restrictions. The nanny defended herself by saying that if she had been informed, she would have respected the family’s eating habits. To confirm her position, the nanny asked Reddit users for their opinion on the matter.
Netizens supported the nanny and blamed the mother for not informing her about dietary restrictions.
One person wrote: “Parents of children must inform you of dietary restrictions. Although the number of vegetarians around the world is increasing, it cannot be guessed. The children willingly ate the chicken and did not warn that they do not eat such food at home. The mother of the children must pay for the child care services provided.”
Another person added: “She should have told you her kids were vegetarian. She still owes you money for child care. I bet she’s used it before to avoid paying for a babysitter.”
“Surprisingly, none of the kids mentioned they don’t eat meat.”
The position of Reddit users is clear: the babysitter is innocent, and the mother’s actions are not justified.
