The mushroom season does not have to end even with the arrival of autumn cooling. This is good news for avid mushroom pickers. Even in the colder season, the forest can hide various types of mushrooms that are edible. However, with falling temperatures and other conditions in the forest comes some important advice and warnings.

Autumn forests are magical, although as they cool, the mushrooms grow a little differently. More experienced mushroom pickers know that it pays to look in drier places where the mushrooms are less susceptible to rotting. With a little patience, you will find mushrooms in these places that you can add to your cart right away.

Even with the falling temperatures, some popular types of mushrooms can still be found in the forest. For example, purple sedums are relatively hardy and, thanks to their distinctive purple coloration, they will not be missed in the autumn forest. Their taste is mild and slightly spicy, so they perfectly complement autumn recipes. Blueberries are edible, but their characteristic color requires some knowledge. There are also poisonous mushrooms with a similar appearance, so it is necessary to collect them with confidence.

Wenceslas

In addition to sedges, you can also come across sedges, which often grow on stumps or tree trunks. Wenceslas cakes are very popular in the kitchen, but they have one peculiarity. Before consumption, it is necessary to boil them thoroughly so that they are digestible and do not cause digestive problems. These mushrooms are great in soups and sauces and bring a nice, strong aroma to the kitchen on colder days. If you take a whiff of the broth from the mushrooms, you will understand why they are so popular among mushroom pickers.

Ryzec and foxes

Another hardy edible species is the spruce sedge, which is typical for its orange-brick color. They have a slightly spicy taste that goes well with, for example, pasta or potatoes baked with herbs. With less effort, you can also spot funnel-shaped foxes that form small clumps. Their aroma is slightly fruity and the taste is delicate, they are perfectly combined with cream for a delicious sauce.

Be careful

In November, it is important to remember the risk of freezing mushrooms. Freezing temperatures disrupt their cellular structure, so they are soft, watery and without a distinct taste or smell after thawing. But the main problem is decomposition, which produces harmful substances that cause digestive problems or poisoning. In addition, frozen mushrooms are more susceptible to mold and bacteria, so it is better not to collect or consume them.

Autumn mushroom picking has its own specific charm. It is no longer about baskets full of mushrooms and bedels, but rather about the targeted search and discovery of small treasures that others overlook. Every find is now a small reward for patience and a watchful eye.
