Early parliamentary elections are expected in Germany in February.
The vote of confidence in the German government in the Bundestag will take place on December 16. This was announced on Tuesday by the Social Democrats (SPD) of Chancellor Olaf Scholz. This term will pave the way for early parliamentary elections in February next year, TASR writes, according to an AFP report.
According to unnamed sources, the SPD and the governing Greens and the opposition Christian Democrats CDU/CSU have previously agreed on a proposal to hold early elections on February 23.
“The vote of confidence will be discussed and voted on on December 16 at the start of the weekly session,” SPD parliamentary faction leader Rolf Mützenich told reporters. The minority cabinet is now expected to fail the confidence vote and the president will be able to dissolve within 21 days Bundestag and call new elections, which must be held within 60 days of the dissolution of the parliament.
After the departure of the liberal FDP party from the government coalition last week, Chancellor Scholz said that he would hold a vote of confidence in his government in January. However, under pressure from the opposition, he indicated his willingness to move the vote to an earlier date before Christmas.
