One layer is enough and the hydrangeas will be safe in the fall
Hydrangeas are definitely the most popular shrubs in Poland. We can find them in virtually every garden and plot. They are relatively easy to care for, and their flowers delight everyone. It is worth knowing that hydrangea bushes are quite delicate and do not tolerate low temperatures very well. At the end of November they should be properly prepared for the coming winter. Even the first frosts can damage shoots and roots. The roots are the first thing that needs to be protected. It is the entire root system that is most sensitive to low temperatures. The most important preparatory step is to make small mounds around the roots. This will provide an insulating layer and cause the temperature around the roots to be higher. Additionally, coniferous tree branches should be placed around the hydrangea. They will retain moisture and prevent the soil from drying out.
Another important preparation step. Most varieties of hydrangeas bloom on last year’s shoots, which is why it is so important to protect them against frost. Agrotextile will work best for this purpose. It protects against cold and wind. If you don’t have access to agrotextiles, you can also use straw or mesh covers.
Should hydrangeas be pruned in autumn?
One of the most common mistakes in autumn hydrangea care is pruning the shoots. Gardeners indicate that autumn is not the time to cut hydrangeas. Before winter, it is only worth removing old and withered shoots. Most hydrangea varieties bloom on last year’s shoots, so pruning them may affect the number of flowers in the next season. best done in early spring before the growing season.
