Javier Milei finally had his telephone conversation with Donald Trump. He had to wait a week, much longer than he would have liked. The Argentine considers that together with Trump “the two most relevant politicians on planet Earth”, and that there was no call after that called into question the enthusiasm of the far-right. The conversation took place this Tuesday. The confirmation came from Buenos Aires, from the mouth of Milei’s spokesperson, Manuel Adorni, with two messages in X. “Donald Trump to President Javier Milei: ‘You are my favorite president,’ Adorni wrote as a summary of the telephone exchange.

The lack of communication between Milei and Trump made the Argentine government impatient. At the Casa Rosada he did not understand why the Republican had preferred to speak with other world leaders, more than 70 the day after his victory, and left the Argentine, his most fervent admirer, for later. Milei himself spent a good part of the week sending direct messages to the Republican, in the face of silence at Mar-a-Lago, Trump’s mansion in Palm Beach, converted into the operations center of the presidential transition in the United States.
On Wednesday morning, the Argentine congratulated Trump in X and made himself available: “Now, make América great again. You know that you can count on Argentina to carry out your task.” He reinforced the offensive through a video on Tik Tok, which he recorded dressed in a leather jacket and staring at the camera: “I congratulate President-elect Donald Trump for the great victory in the elections held yesterday. “You know you can count on Argentina to make the United States great again.”
Trump’s response did not arrive. The Casa Rosada then announced that Milei would have an even bigger prize than a simple phone call: he had been invited to the Conservative Action Political Conference (CPAC), which will be held between November 14 and 16 in Palm Beach. The intention is that there will be a face-to-face meeting between Trump and Milei and a new photo, the second since the one in which they both “Let’s make Argentina great again,” Trump told him in English during that fleeting meeting. “I hope to see you again, next time as president,” Milei responded.
Milei’s wishes will be fulfilled this week when she travels to Florida. It will be his seventh visit to the United States since he became president 11 months ago. On this occasion he plans to meet again with businessman Elon Musk. The Argentine maintains that the owner of Tesla is in contact with his Minister of Deregulation, Federico Sturzenegger, because he wants to “replicate the chainsaw” that was implemented in Argentina to public spending. According to Milei, Sturzenegger’s work is “making a splash all over the world.”
Milei celebrated Trump’s victory against Democrat Kamala Harris as his own. The hope in Buenos Aires is that now the fruits of the diplomatic alignment with the United States that has structured Argentina’s new foreign policy since last December will be seen. Two weeks ago, for voting against the US embargo on Cuba. Milei treated her as a traitor for not joining the vote against the United States and Israel. At the same time, he ordered to identify and expel those officials not aligned with official policy. Gerardo Werthein, until then ambassador in Washington, took Mondino’s place, a leader with a fluid ideology – he has a consistent Kirchnerist past – now converted to milleism and with very good relations with Trumpism.
With Trump in the White House, Milei hopes for an outstretched hand, the reward for so many gestures of affection. Argentina needs the support of the United States so that the International Monetary Fund (IMF) advances a new financial aid package, some 15,000 million dollars that would be added to the 44,000 that the multilateral lent in 2018 to former president Mauricio Macri.
