Re-elected President Donald Trump plans to choose senator Marco Rubio to assume the position of Secretary of State in his new term, according to sources heard by The New York Times. Three people familiar with the decision told the newspaper that Rubio, a senator from Florida since 2010 and an influential figure in the Tea Party movement, will be appointed to lead US diplomacy.
Rubio and Trump have faced tensions in the past, especially during the 2016 presidential campaign, when they exchanged attacks and then-candidate Trump taunted Rubio with the nickname “Little Marco” (little Marco). However, the two resolved their differences after Trump’s victory that year.
Since then, Rubio has served as Trump’s informal advisor on foreign policy and was one of those responsible for helping him prepare for the debate against Joe Biden in 2020.

With Rubio taking over the State Department, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis will be able to name a temporary replacement to fill his Senate seat until the next general election, according to state law.
After the recent elections, Republicans maintain a solid majority in the Senate, with at least 52 seats, and the temporary replacement should further strengthen the conservative bench.
