78-year-old man accused of mistreating pet animals in Loulé

The Public Prosecutor’s Office of the Department of Investigation and Criminal Action (DIAP) in Loulé, charged a 78-year-old man with three crimes of mistreating pet animals.

According to a statement published on the website, “in September 2022, in the backyard of a house located in Sítio da Troia, Loulé, the accused had a dog and a bitch that were loose, and in a shed attached to the house, a dog tied with a chain to a collar.”

According to the indictment, “the accused spent weeks without going to the said house, not feeding or watering the dogs, with the neighborhood doing so.”

When the animals were rescued by the Nature and Environmental Protection services of the National Republican Guard, “the dog was dehydrated and in a state of severe emaciation, having died within the next few days. The two dogs were taken in by the Loulé municipal kennel.”

The investigation concluded that “the accused had had at least four dogs in the backyard of the house, which died due to a lack of food and drink on his part.”
