The checks will be extended for another six months.
On Tuesday, Austria extended controls at the internal Schengen borders with Hungary and Slovenia for another six months until May 11 next year. This was reported by the Austrian head of the Ministry of the Interior, Gerhard Karner, writes TASR according to the APA agency.
“Border controls are and remain a decisive factor in the fight against illegal migration,” the minister said. He added that the number of people caught at the border has significantly decreased with these measures, while the “trafficking mafia” is avoiding Austria in the meantime.
The Ministry of the Interior also announced that, in addition to Austria, internal border controls are currently in force in Germany, Denmark, France, Italy, Norway, Sweden and Slovenia. The Netherlands will start checks on its borders with Belgium and Germany on December 9.
Out of fear of illegal migration, Austria extended extraordinary checks on the Schengen border with the Czech Republic and Slovakia on October 22 until April 15, 2025.
