Austrian political parties want to form a new government coalition without the participation of the winning far-right Free Party of Austria.
Austrian populists and social democrats invited a third party – the liberal NEOS – to the negotiations on the formation of a new government. Federal Chancellor Karl Nehammer announced this on Tuesday. TASR informs according to the reports of APA and Reuters agencies.
Austrian political parties are trying to form a new governing coalition without the participation of the far-right Free Party of Austria (FPÖ), which won the September parliamentary elections.
According to the chancellor and at the same time the chairman of the Austrian People’s Party (ÖVP) Nehammer, the NEOS party will join the negotiations from Wednesday. Their goal is to be a “government of constructive forces”, explained the head of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ), Andreas Babler.
Austrian President Alexander Van der Bellen commissioned Nehammer to form a government, despite the fact that his People’s Party finished second behind the FPÖ. In addition to the aforementioned four parties, the Greens, the coalition partner of the People’s Party in the outgoing government, also entered the Austrian National Council.
