Ineligible until 2030, the former president also spoke about possible help from Donald Trump in the 2026 elections
The former president (PL), who is ineligible until 2030, stated last Tuesday (November 12, 2024) that he will continue as a candidate for the Presidency of the Republic until his “political death be announced for real”.
In an interview with MetropolisesBolsonaro stated that he believes he will be able to reverse his ineligibility in court or in Congress. According to the former president, the hope that the Legislature can help him is related to “winds of democracy”, that are benefiting the right around the globe, such as in the United States and Argentina.
“The answer is the same: this particle ‘if, if, perhaps’ does not exist. I am a candidate until my political death is announced for real. They have no argument to take me out of politics. Except for power, the force of arbitrary acts against me. I repeat: what is the accusation against me? What did I do wrong to not contest an election? And, if I’m that bad, let me compete to lose. It’s very simple. Or are they afraid of my candidacy?”, declared Bolsonaro.
The former president also said that “no mistake” in the situations that made him ineligible, participation in a demonstration on September 7, 2022 and a meeting with ambassadors in which he criticized electronic voting machines.
Bolsonaro also commented on possible help in the 2026 Brazilian elections, arguing that the president-elect of the United States is concerned about the advancement of the left in South America. Despite not currently being in dialogue with Trump, Bolsonaro said that his son and congressman federal (PL-SP) has been leading the conversations with the Republican.
“I don’t have that much freedom to talk to him, despite knowing some advisors, who are being pre-announced to form his cabinet. But I believe he has a huge interest in Brazil, because of its size, its riches, what it represents for our people. And as a country that can really, here, as an example, positively unbalance the whole of South America for democracy, for freedom”these.
