The leader of na, (BA), announced this Wednesday (13) that he has given up his candidacy to succeed (-AL) as president of the House. He also said that the party will support (Republicanos-PB).
The movement in the race practically buries the possibility of another competitive candidacy.
“It was a majority position from the bench, many agreed, others didn’t. We are together in a single decision. The PSDB candidacy led by me is retired and we declare support for Hugo Motta’s candidacy”, said Brito.
The announcement was made alongside the party’s national president, , after a meeting of the party bench at the House. Kassab stated after the meeting that it is necessary to “look ahead, think about Brazil and an increasingly better country”.
Earlier this Wednesday, Brito and Kassab met with Hugo and the leader of the PP, Doutor Luizinho (RJ). On Monday, Kassab was with Lira, in São Paulo.
At the beginning of the meeting, deputy Gilberto Nascimento (PSD) joked about Kassab’s participation in the room, in reference to the leader’s political influence. “God created them and Kassab brought them together,” he said.
Last week, . After a meeting with PSD deputies, he was reappointed party leader and said that he was still a candidate, but that he would open a dialogue with Hugo and Lira to discuss the party’s “proportionality” in the Chamber’s spaces.
Today, the PSD occupies the 3rd Secretariat of the House, the first substitute and the presidency of the Internal Affairs and Ombudsman’s Office, in addition to being in charge of two commissions: Mines and Energy and Tourism.
Behind the scenes, parliamentarians from the party say that, if there was a sign of the maintenance of these spaces, in addition to the report from the CMO (Mixed Budget Committee) for next year, the party could withdraw from Brito’s candidacy. This is because in Lira’s re-election a rotation was established between four parties related to the CMO and the CCJ (Constitution and Justice Commission).
The third secretariat, however, was promised to Podemos, which has already announced support for Hugo. There is also a knot to be untied with the CMO. Because the report in 2025 was promised by Hugo to the MDB — and the party does not intend to give up this space to consider the PSD. União Brasil itself is also applying for this vacancy.
There is an assessment among Hugo’s allies that the parliamentarian cannot give up spaces already negotiated with other acronyms to accommodate União Brasil and PSD, as the two parties had their own candidacies and resisted endorsing the Republican leader.
This Wednesday, however, Brito said that these spaces will be maintained. “Everything is maintained. It is the bench’s right, we are not asking for anything more than what the bench would have in the House. The PSDB bench remains united and now we will move forward for the good of the Chamber and for the good of the country”, he said.
He also announced that he will be led by the MDB, PSD, Podemos and Republicans bloc until February.
A leader familiar with the negotiations tells the Sheetsubject to reservations, that the agreement signed for the PSD to support Hugo provides that the party will retain the 4th Secretariat, the Internal Affairs Department, the two commissions that the party already presides over and the presidency of the CMO in 2026.
The leader of União Brasil, in the dispute. , although Elmar has not yet publicly given up (he is awaiting the end of space negotiations with Hugo).
Until moments before the meeting, the PSDB bench was divided: on one side, deputies defended maintaining the candidacy to establish a position. On the other hand, parliamentarians were afraid of the party being sidelined and losing its space in the Chamber.
Despite this, there is a feeling on the bench of “dissatisfaction” with the government and the . Deputies say that the party votes heavily on matters of interest to the Executive and that Brito, among the candidates for the presidency of the House, was the one considered the most pro-government. In this way, they counted on the support of the PT for their candidacy.
They say that the group deserves recognition from the Executive and even cite the desire for a new ministry to be led by a representative of the group. They criticize the fact that the Ministry of Fisheries, led by André de Paula, has little power and say that another department or even a more robust one is needed.
A party leader says, with reservations, that the government’s relationship with the PSD in the Chamber “must be rethought”.
Although Hugo’s candidacy was consolidated, allies of the Republican leader considered it necessary to remove Brito from the dispute to avoid any turnaround in the election, even if they considered this possibility remote.
Furthermore, members of the center do not deny dissatisfaction with Kassab, especially after the results of the municipal elections. From the beginning, they warned that Brito as president of the House would give too much power to the president of the party.
