The largest companies developed a joint position in defense of the end of and the reduction of working hours without reducing wages.
In a letter obtained by the Panel, the presidents of CUT, Força Sindical, UGT, CSB and NCST highlight that the last reduction in working hours took place in the 1988 Constitution, when it went from 48 hours to 44 hours.
“With the advancement of automation and technological changes in the production process, the world of work is no longer the same as it was in 1988. It is high time to readjust this journey, without reducing wages and jobs”, says the text .
The centers state that the “viralization” of the issue on social media “shows that this is a strong desire of the working class.”
“Brazilians want a better quality of life, well-being and fewer occupational illnesses. They want, finally, to work based on more humanized relationships. This is possible and is more than fair”, they add.
The letter also says that experiences of reducing working hours in other countries show that there is an increase in labor productivity and a stimulus for the creation of new jobs.
“Our fight is for automation to result in more free time and never unemployment. It is for the valorization of formal work, with registration, so that more workers are covered by union and legal achievements. And it is for the strengthening of union entities , which will guarantee in day-to-day practice the implementation of labor rights won through a lot of struggle and resistance”, he concludes.
