The inclusion of the Ministry of Defense in the spending cut package will be defined this Wednesday (13), in a meeting between minister José Mucio, officials and technicians from the economic team, the Ministry of Finance reported this evening. The meeting will take place in the morning, at the Ministry of Defense.
The Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, is not expected to attend the meeting. The department’s executive secretary, Dario Durigan, will represent him. According to the Treasury, the meeting will have a technical nature, for the two departments to discuss the design of the measures, before sending the text to Palácio do Planalto.
The inclusion of the Ministry of Defense in the review of mandatory spending was requested by President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva to close the package, said Haddad on Monday night (12). At the time, the minister did not inform the department, but the Ministry of Finance confirmed this Tuesday that Defense will be part of the measures.

This Tuesday, a meeting between Lula and Haddad was scheduled to finalize how the proposals would be forwarded to the National Congress, but the meeting did not take place. In the morning, Haddad met with social ministers to discuss, according to the Ministry of Finance, changes to the anniversary withdrawal from the Service Time Guarantee Fund (FGTS) and the granting of private payroll loans through e-Social .
On Monday night, Haddad reported that this morning’s meetings did not address spending cuts. According to the minister, the measures for the social ministries were finalized in a meeting at Palácio da Alvorada this Sunday (10).
At around 7pm, Haddad left to meet Lula at Palácio da Alvorada. The Ministry of Finance, however, did not say whether the conversation concerns sending the proposals to Congress.
