Washing a down jacket can seem difficult if you don’t know how to do it. We don’t have to take it to the laundromat right away, but we can wash it at home. Just follow a few rules and you will be ready for winter. How to wash a down jacket at home?
Before washing the down jacket
Downy jackets perfectly insulate our body from the cold, so they are an ideal piece of clothing in autumn rainy weather or winter cold. Such clothing is also light and usually does not restrict movement, so this feature speaks in its favor again. You should know that not all clothes can be washed at home, so read the manufacturer’s label first. If the manufacturer does not prohibit home washing, wash the jacket only when you get it very dirty and follow the correct procedure.
How to wash a down jacket?
The down jacket can be washed in two ways: either by hand or in the washing machine. Choosing the right method – of course – depends on the manufacturer’s recommendations. Both methods have their advantages and disadvantages, which usually need to be taken into account when you want to start refreshing your down jacket. Regardless of the washing method, it is worth looking for detergents designed for washing this type of clothing.
And what to do with a wet down jacket? Drying can be carried out on a conventional dryer as well as on a drum dryer.
Hand washing down jackets
Hand washing is the easiest and safest way to clean. A bathtub filled with lukewarm water and a special detergent is best suited for this. But before the jacket lands in your tub, you have to take everything out of the pockets, turn it inside out, lay it straight and evenly in the tub. Hand washing usually involves soaking and gently kneading the jacket in warm water. Washed clothing should not be wringed, but should be left in an empty tub for some time to allow excess water to drain from it and then squeeze out as much moisture as possible.
Washing the down jacket in the washing machine
Washing in a washing machine seems to be easier, but it also has its own rules. First you need to prepare the down jacket: you need to empty the pockets and turn it inside out. Some recommend soaking the garment beforehand, but you don’t have to. But remember one thing: clean the detergent drawer so that there is no powdery detergent left in it, which can damage the delicate lining of the jacket. Instead, you need to use a special down detergent. If the clothes are already in the washing machine, choose a gentle program with a low temperature: for example, a program designed for washing wool. For better results, you can put two/three tennis balls in the washing machine drum together with the jacket to break up the fluff during the spin cycle.
Down jacket drying
We already know that drying a down jacket can be done in two ways:
- Dryer: put the down jacket in the washing machine together with the tennis balls and set the program with low temperature (30 to 40 degrees Celsius) and low spin. Sometimes it is necessary to repeat this process several times to make the jacket completely dry.
- Traditional dryer: the jacket should be dried flat. A thick towel can be placed under it to absorb excess water. After a few hours, the jacket needs to be turned inside out so that it is tucked in evenly.
Take a jacket out of your wardrobe and get ready for winter. Throw a few of them in the drum and say goodbye to the pressed powder
