The evangelical bench of the Chamber of Deputies concluded this Tuesday (12) its support for federal deputy Hugo Motta (Republicanos-PB) in his candidacy to succeed Arthur Lira (PP-AL) as president of the house. With this, he has already managed to consolidate an alliance with 15 parties, including rivals PT and PL.

Confirmation of support occurred at night during a dinner in Brasília, which was attended by Lira supporting the creation of the alliance.

“Today is a day of great joy and of certainty that we are on the right path towards building a successful election and a management in the Chamber of Deputies that continues the good work that President Arthur Lira established”, he said during his speech. .

Motta already has the support of his own party and also of the PP, PL, PT, PCdoB, PV, PRD, Rede, Solidariedade, Cidadania, PSDB, PSB, PDT, MDB and Podemos. There is an expectation that União Brasil and PSD will decide the direction this week.

Despite receiving the support of the bench of 219 deputies, he stated that he did not commit to any specific agenda, and that the consolidation was due to the many years of relationship he has in the Chamber.

“The Front will count on our support, on our dialogue, on our deference, so that the topics of interest to the Front can be a priority in our future management”, he pointed out.

Hugo Motta avoided committing to controversial topics, such as the project that regulates social networks, stating that this decision is up to the majority of deputies and that the presidency of the Chamber is a more administrative position. For him, the house’s agenda “is not made solely and exclusively by the president, it is made by the construction of agreements”, he said in an interview with the newspaper The Globe.

Representative Silas Câmara (Republicanos-AM), coordinator of the evangelical bench, reinforced that there is no list of specific demands to be negotiated with the candidate.

“Everyone knows our flags, we are against abortion and obviously we will fight with the weapons of parliament and with the direct vote that Brazilians give us the right to in the National Congress. We have this tool in hand, the president is a consequence, both in the agenda and in the proceedings, of the House as a whole. What we want is respect for the behavior of the House”, he stated.

Motta’s alliance comprises 385 deputies, which guarantees him a solid basis for a possible victory in the first round, as 257 votes are needed.
