Masaryk’s candy
To prepare Masaryk cookies, you will need 250 grams of plain flour, 150 grams of butter, 80 grams of powdered sugar, one egg yolk, a spoonful of vanilla sugar and 100 grams of hazelnuts, which make up the basic flavor of this candy.
Before starting, soak the whole nuts in cold water for at least an hour so that they soften a little and combine with the dough more easily. Beat the butter, icing sugar and egg yolk until smooth, then add the flour and vanilla sugar and work into a stiff dough. Finally, add the dried hazelnuts to the mixture so that they are evenly distributed throughout the mass.
Divide the resulting dough into two halves and shape each into a roll. Wrap these rolls in cling film and put them in the fridge overnight so that the dough gets firmer and the nuts fit into it better.
Cut the rolls from the refrigerator into slices about a centimeter thick with a sharp knife. Place the slices on a tray lined with baking paper and bake in an oven preheated to 170°C for approximately 10 to 12 minutes, until the cookies are golden.
After baking, roll the slices while they are still warm in icing sugar to give them a festive look and a slightly sweet taste. This version of Masaryk’s cookies is one of many that you can try. To change the flavors, you can use mead instead of water, or add cocoa instead of vanilla to the batter to create a darker and bolder version.
