Friar killed in Spain by man claiming to be Jesus Christ

Friars of the convent of Santo Espírito do Monte, Valencia, Spain

“I am Jesus Christ”, shouted the Spaniard who, this Saturday, killed a friar in a monastery, guaranteeing that he was acting “in the name of God”. After 24 hours on the run, he was arrested by Spanish authorities.

The 46-year-old Spaniard is considered by the police to be a “mentally altered man”.

However, he was not so altered that he had not been able to escape after the attack carried out this Saturday, at 10 am, on the convent of Santo Espírito do Montein Gilet, Valencia.

Upon entering the establishment, he attacked the friars with sticks and a bottle he encountered along the way, shouting that he was acting “in the name of God”.

“Someone came in and started hitting the friars with a stick, room by room. It created a chaotic situation in the monastery, fortunately there were no guests in the space“, he told the president of the Chamber, Save the Coast.

The man will have jumped the monastery fence and went from room to room giving kicks and punches on victims.

“The information we have is that seven other people were attacked,” said a spokesperson for the Valencian Civil Guard. The suspect was said to have been on the run for almost 24 hours before being captured by police this Sunday. He is expected to appear in court on Monday.

The 76-year-old man who died reportedly suffered head injuries, and only two friars who were working in an orchard outside escaped the attack. Three clerics aged 57, 66 and 95 would have been taken to the hospital, one of them in critical condition.
