Representative José Guimarães (PT-CE), government leader in the Chamber of Deputies, spoke about the succession of the current national president of the Workers’ Party (PT), Gleisi Hoffmann.
In an interview with CNN Behind the Scenes This Tuesday (12), Guimarães emphasized the importance of considering “the weight of the Northeast” in this process.
Guimarães, whose name is circulating as a possible candidate for the post, did not directly confirm his candidacy. However, he highlighted his commitment to the party: “I have always been a member of the PT, my commitment to the PT is unwavering, I owe what I am today to the PT”.
The government leader highlighted that President Lula asked Hoffmann to lead the succession process.
Guimarães stated that he was willing to serve the party’s project, but also mentioned his pre-candidacy for the Federal Senate for Ceará in 2026.
PT’s strength in the Northeast
Guimarães emphasized the PT’s recent electoral victories in the region: “In addition to the victory in Fortaleza, we had an extraordinary vote in Olinda. In Natal, Natalia [Bonavides] almost wins election. Fábio Novo almost won in Teresina”. He argued that the Northeast is the “PT’s stronghold” and serves as a reference for the country.
The deputy also highlighted the need for the PT to prepare for the 2026 elections: “We have to build a path so that in 2026 we can consolidate an alliance between the left and the Center, to win the elections and defeat the enemies of democracy in the Brazil”.
Guimarães concluded by stating that anyone who becomes president of the PT must propose a new program for the party and make necessary reformulations, considering the country’s current and future political scenario.
