Democrats call Donald Trump a threat to democracy. However, incumbent President Joe Biden decided to follow the usual handover protocols in the US.
US President Joe Biden will welcome the winner of the presidential election – Republican candidate Donald Trump – to the Oval Office of the White House on Wednesday at 5:00 p.m. TASR informs about it based on the report of the DPA agency.
Shortly after the election, 81-year-old Biden congratulated 78-year-old Trump on his victory and invited him to the White House. Trump also plans to meet with leading Republicans in the US Congress before the meeting. Republicans won the majority in the Senate and are likely to control the House of Representatives as well.
A threat to democracy and belief in norms
Democrats call Trump a threat to democracy, but Biden is still following the usual handover protocols in the US. “(Biden) believes in norms, he believes in our institution, he believes in a peaceful transfer of power,” a White House spokeswoman told reporters on Tuesday regarding Biden’s decision to invite Trump.
The ex-president did not adhere to such conventions in 2020. He refused to acknowledge his defeat in the election, did not invite Biden to the White House and did not even participate in the inauguration of the new president.
Despite the fact that Biden wants to point out continuity with the meeting, the gradual change of the office itself has partially stopped. Trump’s team, which has already released the names of some members of the future president’s cabinet, has yet to sign agreements to obtain office space, government equipment and access to government facilities or information, according to the White House.
Other meeting in June
“Lawyers from the Trump and Vance offices continue to work constructively with lawyers from the Biden and Harris administrations on all agreements set forth in the Presidential Transition Act,” a Trump office spokesman said.
Trump last met with Biden in person in June during a televised primary debate. The president withdrew from the race for the White House shortly thereafter. Both of them also participated in the commemoration of the terrorist attack on the Twin Towers on September 11 in New York, but they did not communicate directly there.
