After the match between Argentines Deportivo Riestra and Vélez Sarsfield, which marked the striker Braian Romero fired a shot at the Buenos Aires club’s marketing action. In the Argentine’s words, the use of the influencer on the field this Monday (11) would have been disrespectful to the sport itself.
“Today I went to Villa Olímpica to see a ‘sieve’ of kids who came from the provinces, who came for tests at Vélez and left frustrated because they didn’t pass. This is football: trying until the last, leaving your family, traveling ten hours. (…) Today was a lack of respect for football. It’s the wrong message we give to society and to kids, to those who try until the end and don’t succeed,” said the striker, in an interview with ESPN.
“From my position I tell them that this is not the way, and to keep trying, that this is football: try, fail, try, fail, fail and try and keep trying. Today we show a wrong message to the kids who come from below”, he added.
The participation of YouTuber Ivan Buhajeruk, known as “Spreen”, lasted just 47 seconds, when the influencer was replaced. Playing with the number 47 shirt, Spreen has a commercial agreement with an energy drink brand that has the president of the Buenos Aires club as one of the partners. The brand is even printed on the Deportivo Riestra shirt.
In a statement, the Argentine club apologized and said that the objective was not to offend, but to bring a new audience to the sport. “We want to offer our sincerest apologies to those who were offended. At no time was our intention to lack respect for Vélez Sarsfield or Argentine football in general”, says the note.
