President Luiz Inácio da Silva (PT) defended, this Tuesday (12), that public companies finance cultural festivals that private companies do not want.

The declaration took place during the sanction of the bill establishing National Maracatu Day, at Palácio do Planalto.

Lula said that cultural groups, such as maracatu, are “confined” in their regions due to a lack of resources to take to another state.

“If we wait for only the companions who practice maracatu in the world, Brazil and Pernambuco to have money to be shown on TV channels and travel around the country and make other states aware of it, we will continue to be the same size as we are. yeah,” said Lula

“We have to convince Brazilian public companies to do what private companies don’t want to do. If they don’t want to finance maracatu festivals, they have to find a public company that can finance them”, he continued.

The speech comes at a time when the Lula government has been discussing in recent weeks a spending cut package, to balance public finances, under market pressure.

During his speech, Lula drew laughter when he talked about money for maracatu.

“There’s no money for that [maracatu]. And now, dear Margareth, we’re going to have… to find money, sponsorship”, he said. As there was a pause in the sentence, the audience of artists and politicians from Pernambuco laughed.

The president also said that there needs to be a big maracatu party, in all states, on August 1st, the day to celebrate the cultural event, in accordance with the sanctioned law.
