The model Sheynnis Palacios was elected Miss Universe in the 72nd edition of the contest, at the event that took place in the capital of El Salvador, San Salvador, in 2023. She was the first Nicaraguan representative to take the crown for the country.
Winners of national competitions from 84 countries competed in last year’s edition and were judged by a jury listed below.
- Halima Aden, “Queer Eye” star Carson Kressley;
- TikTok influencer Avani Gregg;
- to Miss Universe 1977, Janelle Commissiong, (Trinidad and Tobago);
- and Miss Universe 2016, Iris Mittenaere of France (France).
Twenty semi-finalists were announced at the start of the contest, following the results of the preliminary competition (and a global fan vote). After the swimsuit round, there were ten contestants left.
Then, the evening gown evaluation reduced the number of contestants by half again.
Two rounds of questions and answers on hot topics left only three misses in the running: Sheynnis Palacios, second place Anntonia Porsild, from Thailand, and third place, Moraya Wilson, from Australia.
Asked in the final round who she would choose to spend a day in the life with, Palacios chose 18th-century British philosopher and feminist Mary Wollstonecraft, who she said broke boundaries and “gave an opportunity to many women.”
“There are no limitations for women today,” she added, through a translator.
Who is Sheynnis Palacios?
born in Managua, capital of Nicaragua, is 23 years old and is an audiovisual producer. In 2022, Palacios revealed that he graduated in communications from the Central American University (UCA), a Jesuit university that was confiscated in the middle of this year by the government of Daniel Ortega.
Palacios is a mental health activist, a topic she took up after suffering from anxiety problems. Through “Understand Your Mind”, a podcast in which she interviews experts, the young Nicaraguan offers a space to inform people who experience the same condition as her.
Although he prefers to stay behind the camera, Palacios believes that the spotlight can be used to solve the world’s many problems. His life goal, according to his profile, is “to work in the service of humanity, directing an editorial team and producing content and advertisements for international brands”.
The young Nicaraguan considers herself a resilient person and said, in a brief description of herself in Miss Universe, that if she could have one power it would be to dominate elements such as air and fire.
Miss Universe 2024
The world will know the new Miss Universe this year on Saturday (16).
The future holder of the crown will be chosen and crowned during the ceremony of the 73rd edition of the pageant, which will take place in Mexico City and will feature participants from all over the world.
This will be Miss Universe with the greatest diversity ever seen in history.
This is because the new management of the contest, which is now led by Thai Anne Jakkaphong Jakrajutatip, allowed more women to register in all franchises of the contest around the world.
