Starting today, collectors and numismatic enthusiasts have a new piece to consider. The Bank of Portugal announced the entry into circulation of a collector coin with a face value of 5 euros, called “Oconhecimento”. This limited edition, which is part of the “Designing the Currency” project, has just 20 thousand copies and was created to honor the importance of knowledge and education.
In a statement, Banco de Portugal informed that “distribution to the public will be made through credit institutions, Banco de Portugal treasuries and Imprensa Nacional-Casa da Moeda stores”.
An inspiring design: Coin details
On the obverse of the coin, on the left, we find the face value “5 euros”, accompanied, on the right, by the national shield. The upper part displays the inscription “Portugal”, while the lower part features a representation of coins and notes, with the captions “500”, “20” and “10”.
On the reverse, the coin reveals a test balloon, a symbol of experimentation and science, positioned on the right. To the left of the balloon, you can see the word “Education”, accompanied below by the expression “Technological”, both inserted in school boards, in an allusion to the fundamental role of education in innovation. On the lower left edge, you can read the name of the author and the inscription “Casa da Moeda”, and on the right, the year “2024”.
Limited edition and availability
This coin, approved by Ordinance No. 440/2023, published in the Official Gazette of the Union on December 18, 2023, was minted with a normal finish and is limited to 20 thousand copies.
Despite not having regular circulation, this currency is valid as a means of payment only within the national territory, becoming not only a collector’s item, but also a celebration of knowledge and education as pillars of national development.
