The Social Democratic Party (PSD), a party led by Gilberto Kassab and one of the biggest winners of this year’s municipal elections, decided to change course and support the federal deputy’s candidacy Hugo Motta (Republicans-PB) to the presidency of the Chamber.
The official announcement was made this Wednesday (13), with the withdrawal of the deputy’s candidacy Antonio Brito (PSDB-BA) of the dispute for command of the House.
Motta is the big favorite in the election of the Board of Directors of the Chamber, which will take place in February 2025. He is the candidate supported by the current president of the Chamber, Arthur Lira (PP-AL).

“The bench decided, with my proposal, to withdraw the candidacy for mayor, so that we can continue the process that is already taking place with the other leaders of the House and support Hugo Motta’s candidacy for president. This is the decision of the PSDB bench, it was a majority position of the bench”, said Brito himself, at a press conference.
The statements by the candidate to succeed Lira in the Chamber were given alongside the national president of the PSD, Gilberto Kassab. The party has a bench of 44 deputies.

Together, the parties have 429 parliamentarians, which indicates a peaceful victory for Motta in the election. To be elected president of the Chamber, the deputy will need 257 votes.
Who is Hugo Motta
– he turned 35 on September 11th. If he wins the election, scheduled for February 2015, Motta would surpass former deputy Luís Eduardo Magalhães (1955-1998), who took command of the Chamber in 1995, at the age of 39.
Motta has always circulated well among different political currents in Brasília and is considered close to all the last presidents of the Chamber: Eduardo Cunha (2015-2016), Rodrigo Maia (2016-2021) and Lira himself (since 2021).

The deputy from Paraíba also has a good relationship with senator Ciro Nogueira (PI), national president of the PP and one of the main leaders of the “centrão” in the National Congress.
In the 2022 elections, when he won his fourth consecutive term in the Chamber, Hugo Motta was the federal deputy with the most votes in Paraíba. The parliamentarian is in his third consecutive year as leader of the Republicans in the House.
