The PSD bench in the Senate confirmed its support for the candidacy of senator Davi Alcolumbre (União-AP) to succeed the Senate Presidency. Thus, the party withdrew from the pre-candidacy of senator Eliziane Gama (PSD-MA). The announcement was made after a bench meeting on Tuesday afternoon (12).

The withdrawal was previously aligned with the president of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), who supports Alcolumbre’s candidacy.

“After a very broad discussion, Senator Eliziane, for the unity of the party, to march with the party, gave up her candidacy, and the party will support the candidacy of Senator Davi Alcolumbre for the presidency of the Senate”, said the leader of bench, Omar Aziz (PSDB-AM).

After the party’s decision, Eliziane spoke out on social media and said that she respects the PSD’s choice. “PSD in the Senate decided, in a joint meeting, not to launch its own candidacy to run for president. I respect the decision of the bench and I am grateful for the support I received during these months. I especially thank Gilberto Kassab, Omar Aziz and Otto Alencar”, wrote the senator on the X network.

The parliamentarian sought to be the first female president of the Senate in the institution’s 200 years of existence. So far, Eliziane only had the support of the House’s women’s bench, which is striving to make the group’s candidacy viable.

With the support of the PSD, Alcolumbre already has the support of 7 parties around it, totaling around 59 senators, but without the guarantee of everyone’s votes. To be elected in the 1st round, the candidate needs the absolute majority of 41 of the 81 senators. Elections for the presidency of the Senate will be held in February 2025.
