According to the interim leader of the Senate government, Otto Alencar (PSD-BA), the topic of cutting spending appeared in the meeting between President Lula (PT) and the President of the Senate, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG), but remained in the background.

Lula and Pacheco met this Wednesday morning (13). Upon leaving the meeting, Alencar told journalists that the presidents dealt mainly with changes in regulatory agencies and succession in the National Congress.

According to Alencar, the subject of cutting expenses even came up, but was not explored in depth.

The fact that the issue of spending cuts has been placed on the back burner reinforces the expectation that the announcement of the package of measures promised by the government should be postponed until after the G20 meeting.

Negotiations

On Monday (11), the Minister of Finance, Fernando Haddad, announced the spending cut package for this Wednesday (13).

The minister also stated that another Esplanada ministry will be affected. He, however, did not reveal which folder will be affected.

Although he did not reveal which ministry should be included in the fiscal adjustment package, Haddad stated that it will be from an area other than social, for which negotiation meetings concluded over the weekend.

The ministers responsible for benefits such as Bolsa Família, the Continuous Payment Benefit (BPC) and unemployment insurance have been holding negotiations for more than two weeks.

Earlier, this Wednesday, Haddad spoke with the Minister of Defense, José Mucio, for around an hour and a half to discuss the cuts. In the afternoon, President Lula has a meeting with Mucio.
