The western entrance to the town of Castro Marim, namely Rua de São Sebastião, will be the target of a requalification intervention, the first phase of which will begin over the next few weeks, to promote its pedestrian use and aesthetic and environmental enhancement.
“This first phase will begin with the felling of existing trees, as the current ones are causing damage to buildings close to homes and businesses and to the water supply network, due to the uncontrolled growth of the roots of these species, considered unsuitable and not adapted to the environment. space”, explains in a statement.
The water supply network that “is damaged due to these trees will be replaced, with the space also being temporarily repaired so that it can be enjoyed during this period with peace of mind”.
In a second phase of the requalification, after the launch of the work for competition, “a completely flat area will be created, with no divisions between the sidewalks and the road circulation routes, which will be widened and will accommodate limiting markers that separate the pedestrian area of the road”, says the municipality.
The same street will only “have a single direction, from east to west, thus enhancing pedestrian use and circulation, also ensuring the safety of passers-by”.
These areas will also include living spaces, in addition to framing and protection areas, with benches, flower beds, flower boxes and new species of trees to generate shade.
The area of the statue in homage to the Ultramar Combatants will also be enhanced with a new surrounding vegetation framework.
The choice of species was made according to their adaptation to the region’s climatic conditions and their low water consumption, thus contributing to its economy and the fight against the drought that affects the municipality of Castro Marim and the Algarve, always using, whenever possible, species native to the Mediterranean area.
The space will also have an automatic and efficient irrigation system for all planted areas, carried out locally using self-compensating drippers, with an automatic system that prevents you from watering during rainy periods.
This work aims to “seek to generate conditions of environmental comfort and social coexistence, resulting in a pleasant space”, concludes the city hall of Castro Marin.
