The North American magazine Time elected the Minister (Finance) as one of the 100 most influential world leaders leading business towards climate action. The honor was awarded this Tuesday (12) and also includes personalities such as businessman Bill Gates, executive Ajay Banda, who presides over the World Bank, and the secretary of the United States department of energy, Jennifer Granholm.
In its analysis of Haddad’s honor, Time magazine states that he is “the force behind the president’s (PT) mission to transform Latin America’s largest country, which was previously lagging behind in environmental priorities, into a global climate leader ”.
“Some of its main policies, such as the issuance of green bonds, would only put Brazil on an equal footing with its Latin American neighbors after four years of regression under the former president (PL)”, pointed out the publication.
Still according to the magazine, other proposals, such as a bill inspired by the European Union’s emissions trading plan, would place Brazil among “just a handful of developing countries at the forefront of green finance — and ahead of other major economies like the US and Canada.”
“Haddad hopes to exercise these ambitions and an innovative fund that aims to raise US$125 billion for tropical forests around the world when Brazil hosts the G20 in November and the annual COP climate summit [30, em Belém, PA] of the UN next year”, added Time.
The minister thanked him for the honor and said that “we can help the planet to reconcile an ambitious sustainability agenda with an ambitious economic and productive agenda”.
The honor to Minister Fernando Haddad was granted amid criticism from environmentalists of the government’s certain opposition in preaching the fight against climate change and, at the same time, being in favor of oil exploration at the mouth of the Amazon River by Petrobras.
This Tuesday (12), and that Petrobras will respond to all questions from Ibama, which has been constantly denying the issuance of environmental licensing.
