Huckabee is a longtime supporter of Israel.
President-elect of the United States Donald Trump announced on Tuesday that he will nominate former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee for the post of ambassador to Israel. TASR informs about it based on the report of the AP agency.
Trump has promised to align US foreign policy more closely with the interests of Israel, which is waging a war against Iran-backed militant movements in both the Gaza Strip and Lebanon. Huckabee is a longtime supporter of Israel. “He loves Israel and the people of Israel love him,” Trump said on the sidelines of Huckabee’s nomination. “Mike will work tirelessly to bring peace to the Middle East,” he added.
Huckabee ran unsuccessfully for the Republican Party’s presidential nomination in 2008 and 2016. It is popular among American evangelicals who support Israel, citing the Old Testament.
Evangelicals represent an important voting bloc of the Republican Party and have also praised Trump for moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem in 2018 during his first term as president.
