The Vatican Secretary of State reiterated the appeal of Pope Francis, who asked the richest countries in the world to recognize “the seriousness of the actions committed in the past by canceling old debts.”
The Vatican Secretary of State said this Wednesday that canceling the debt of poor countries is a matter of justice and a way of facing the consequences of the climate crisis.
Italian Cardinal Pietro Parolin defended the measure during his speech at the Climate Summit (COP29) in Baku, Azerbaijan.
“It is necessary to create a new financial ‘architecture’ so that the poorest and most vulnerable countries can fight the environmental crisis,” said Pietro Parolin.

“It would be a fair decision. There is a real ‘ecological debt’ mainly between the south and the north and which is related to trade imbalances”, he added.
The 29th United Nations Climate Change Conference (COP29) started on Monday in the capital of Azerbaijan, and will run until the 22nd.
