President Luiz Inácio da Silva () posed this Tuesday (12) for a photo with members of maracatu groups at Palácio do Planalto. The ceremony also included a dance performance during the sanction of the bill establishing National Maracatu Day, to be celebrated annually on August 1st.
Lula that private companies don’t want. The speech comes at a time when the government has been discussing a spending cut package in recent weeks, to balance public finances, under pressure from the market.
During his speech, Lula drew laughter when he talked about money for maracatu.
“There’s no money for that [maracatu]. And now, dear Margareth, we’re going to have… to find money, sponsorship”, he stated, referring to the Minister of Culture. As there was a pause in the sentence, the audience of artists and politicians from Pernambuco laughed.
The date of August 1st, celebrated in Pernambuco since 1997, honors the birth of master Luís de França, who commanded the traditional Maracatu Leão Coroado for 40 years. The group, founded in 1863, is the oldest in continuous activity in Brazil.
Maracatu has its origins between the 17th and 18th centuries, as a reinterpretation of the coronations of Congo kings and queens, adapted by enslaved Africans. Over time, the manifestation incorporated elements from Amerindian and European cultures. The first records date back to 1711, with a greater presence in the cities of Recife, Olinda and other locations in the former captaincy of Pernambuco.
