“We don’t want an obese RTP”: Government defends cuts in public television in Parliament

Among the measures in the Government’s plan for social communication is o fim of advertising on RTP ea exit of 250 workers of the company.

In a hearing in Parliament, the Minister Pedro Duarte highlighted that public television “is a priority and a betdthe Executive.

We are very committed to RTP and that is why we want to increase modernization. We don’t believe that, if we remain in inaction, in stagnation, in the ultra-conservatism of looking at RTP as a historical asset, that we are providing a good service”, stated the government official.

For the PS, Congresswoman Mara Lagriminha Coelho stated that the Government will not count on socialists to “reduce public service” nor to “stifle revenue” from RTP.

But the Minister of Parliamentary Affairs defended that the end of advertising on public television “is an opportunity for RTP being able to reach more and new audiences.”

Faced with the accusation that the Executive intends to transform the public company into a “tiny and irrelevant RTP”, Pedro Duarte responded that what ndon’t want it “an obese RTP”.

“We want an agile and flexible, muscular RTP for these new times that are coming”, he said.

According to the Government’s plan, the RTP will decrease advertising gradually, nos next sthree years, at the same time what promotional and event spaces cultural vto the gain space not public channel.
