Vice President Geraldo Alckmin (PSB) spoke this Thursday (14) about the three explosions recorded on Wednesday night (13) in Brasília, close to the Federal Supreme Court (STF) and Congress. The position contrasts with that of President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva (PT), who remains silent.

Alckmin classified the explosions as “absurd acts that compromise peace, democracy and security”, but that the institutions are solid and that the “investigation will be rigorous”.

“Sad and serious. Sad for the loss of life, and serious because it was an attack on an institution of the Republic, on a power of the Republic. And it must be investigated extremely quickly and extremely rigorously. And that is what I believe the security agencies will do”, said Alckmin in the midst of COP-29 in Azerbaijan, where he heads the Brazilian delegation.

Still during the statement on the explosions, Alckmin ruled out any risk for the G20 summit, which begins this weekend and which will feature meetings of world leaders on Monday (18) and Tuesday (19). “I don’t see any problem, everything is going very well for Rio de Janeiro”, he pointed out.

Alckmin’s speech follows the line of the director general of the Federal Police, Andrei Passos Rodrigues, that security for the G20 is confirmed and protecting the entire capital of Rio. Rio de Janeiro is under a Law and Order Guarantee (GLO) decree starting this Thursday (14) for one week.

Rodrigues also stated that the PF treats the act as suspected terrorism, and sees a possible connection with the acts of January 8, 2023.

“Our anti-terrorism teams are working on the case,” he said, reinforcing that the investigation is confidential. The PF director also stated that there is evidence of long-term planning and that it will be investigated whether the author of the attacks, Francisco Wanderley Luiz, participated in the acts of January 8, 2023.

“This person has been to Brasília other times. In fact, according to reports from family members, he was in Brasília at the beginning of 2023. It is still too early to say whether there was direct participation in the acts of January 8th, but the investigation will point out”, he added.
