According to a police officer at the scene, several explosive devices were found inside a car near the Square. According to the report of Sergeant Santos, from the DF PM, the police officers saw a man running out of the car, but they believed he was fleeing the fire. The start of the fire was contained by security guards who were nearby. The same sergeant said he believed that the man who ran out of the car was the same man who died near the STF. “The car has some kind of bomb. There are several fractionated explosives tied with bricks around them, but the explosives were not fully ignited,” said the police officer.
“The individual ran away and we believe he was leaving there. It seems to me that it is the same person who tried to set off an explosion here (in the car), failed and ran to the STF. We believe it is the same person who is dead”, added Sergeant Santos. The vehicle has a Santa Cantarina license plate and is registered in the name of Francisco Wanderley Luiz.
Praça dos Três Poderes is isolated after explosions
The body of a man was found in Praça dos Três Poderes after the bangs. According to the Federal District Fire Department, this man died in an area close to the Federal Supreme Court building (). The Federal Police were called and sent agents to the Square. Court ministers were hastily removed from the court headquarters.
The noise could be heard from both the Supreme Court building and the Planalto Palace. At the STF Headquarters, the servers were taken by security guards to a secure room. Images are also circulating on social media of a car exploding in the parking lot of the Chamber of Deputies. This second explosion occurred in a region that is also close to Praça dos Três Poderes.
Notes from the Civil Police of the DF and the STF
In a statement, the DF Civil Police reported that police officers from the 5th Police Station are at the scene and confirmed at least one of the explosions in front of the Supreme Court this Wednesday, 13th. “The PCDF has already started the first investigative measures and the expertise was called to the scene”, says the note.
According to reports from STF employees, after the explosion was heard near the building, security guards also took care of isolating the building and ensured that Court ministers were escorted to another location.
In a note, the STF also confirmed the explosions. “At the end of the STF session this Wednesday (13), two loud bangs were heard and the ministers were safely removed from the building. Servers and employees from the headquarters building were removed as a precautionary measure. More information about the investigations must await the development of the facts. STF Security collaborates with the DF police authorities”, says the note.
