The attorney general is likely to be the most important member of the administration after Trump himself.
The newly elected US President Donald Trump announced on Wednesday that his candidate for the post of Minister of Justice is the Republican congressman Matt Gaetz. TASR informs about it based on a report by Reuters and AFP.
“Matt … will protect our borders, dismantle organized crime and restore Americans’ severely damaged confidence in the Department of Justice,” Trump said in a statement. His nomination for attorney general will have to be approved by the Republican-majority Senate.
Mass deportations
Close associates of the president-elect have indicated that the attorney general will be the most important member of the administration after Trump himself, as he will be in charge of carrying out mass deportations of illegal immigrants and pardoning the rioters who attacked the Capitol on January 6, 2021.
During his first term, Trump called the Department of Justice obstructive. His former Justice Department chief, Jeff Sessions, authorized an investigation into contacts between Trump’s campaign team and Russia. Another ex-minister of justice, Bill Barr, publicly refuted Trump’s claims that the 2020 election was rigged.
