The Minister of Institutional Relations, Alexandre Padilha, stated this Thursday, 14th, that the bomb attack that occurred near the Federal Supreme Court (STF) is part of “perverted far-right extremism”.

“We regret it. First, as a doctor I will regret the loss of a life and I regret even more the fact of the culture of hate, this perverted far-right extremism has led to people in situations like this”, declared the minister to CNN Brazil.

Padilha reported that he was at a press conference with parliamentarians, at the time of the explosion, in Praça dos Três Poderes. He had just participated in a meeting with the author of the PEC against the 6×1 journey, deputy Erika Hilton (PSOL-RJ).

Regarding President Lula’s lack of positioning on what happened, Padilha informed that the president is on an intense agenda with international authorities from the G20, but has guided all security by the federal government.

“Since yesterday, when he found out about the incident, he determined all actions taken by the PF and security agents to guarantee the safety of the ministers of the STF and Praça dos Três Poderes. Today, in the morning, he reinforced his concern about this,” said Padilha. On the other hand, he avoided talking about whether Lula will take a position or not, only declaring that “at the appropriate time, he may take a position or make a statement to the press.”

Difficult environment to discuss amnesty for 8/1

In Padilha’s assessment, the explosion refers to the acts of January 8, which should make it even more impossible to grant amnesty to those convicted. He also said that what happened reinforces the lack of environment in Congress for a vote on the issue.

“It was already a very difficult environment and it becomes even more difficult after yesterday’s incident for anyone who comes to defend those who encourage hatred, the culture of hate or those who try to cover up coup acts, crimes, vandalism in institutions. So, I think that those who still defend this have the most difficult situation in making this defense, because the importance of investigating and vehemently punishing crimes like this is becoming increasingly clear”, highlighted Padilha.

The minister also reinforced the need to respect the entire legal process, with the right to defense, but identifying responsibility. “Those who commit crimes like this must be vehemently punished, because otherwise it becomes an avalanche, people start to feel the urge to commit this type of crime”, he added.

Finally, Padilha added that the entire case will be investigated in the “best possible way”. “We don’t want to see people dying and our institutions suffering from it, yesterday’s act meant a loss of life, a general alert, a pause in the National Congress and how much we need to consolidate democracy, we don’t want that anymore. It has to be something civilized, respecting democracy and always defending life”, he concluded.
