The National Emergency and Civil Protection Authority warns of forecasts of intense rain, hail, thunderstorms and strong winds in the Center and South of Portugal, with greater severity in Baixo Alentejo and Algarve. As the weather worsens, find out the following recommendations.
O predicts the occurrence of intense rain, hail and thunderstorms, especially in the Central and Southern regions of the country. Baixo Alentejo and Algarve will be the most affected areas. Furthermore, the wind is expected to blow strongly from the eastern quadrant, especially in the coastal strip south of Cabo Carvoeiro and in the highlands of the Central and Southern regions, with the possibility of extreme wind phenomena.
Given the forecast, Civil Protection warns that flooding may occur in urban areas, caused by the accumulation of rainwater and obstruction of the drainage system, as well as flooding due to the overflow of rivers and streams. There is also a danger of landslides and collapses and risk of loose objects or poorly fixed structures being dragged onto the roads.
What can I do to protect myself?
Taking into account the risks, Civil Protection rrecommends the population to adopt preventive measures, especially in areas historically more vulnerable. The national authority suggests to the population that ensure the unblocking of rainwater drainage systems and the removal of objects that could block the flow, as well as the fixing of loose structures, such as scaffolding.
To those who walk on the road, calls for defensive driving, reducing speed and paying attention to water levels on the roads. The population should also avoid flooded areas and remain attentive to information weather conditions, to indications from Civil Protection authorities and security forces.
Five districts under yellow warning
Five districts on the continent are under yellow warning this Thursday due to the forecast of locally heavy showers, which may be accompanied by thunderstorms and hail, due to a depression, according to the Portuguese Institute of the Sea and Atmosphere (IPMA).
The districts of Faro and Beja will be under yellow warning until 3pm this Thursday and again on Friday between 3am and 9pm.
The yellow rain warning for the districts of Lisbon and Setúbal will be in effect between 12pm and 6pm this Thursday and in Santarém from 3pm to 9pm.
