Previously, some newspapers called for an emergency hearing; stated that the social network refused to negotiate
Several French newspapers announced last Tuesday (12.Nov.2024) that they will sue the social network X (formerly), owned by billionaire Elon Musk, for using content without payment. Previously, the companies had summoned the platform to an emergency hearing, saying the social network refused to negotiate.
Copyright-related guidelines authorize internet platforms to pay newspapers, news agencies and magazines for their content reproduced in these applications.
Read the list of which newspapers filed the lawsuit against X:
- The World;
- Télérama;
- Le Figaro;
- The Echoes;
- The Parisian;
- The Huffington Post;
- International Mail;
- Malesherbes Publication;
- The New Obs.
In May of this year, a judge was in favor of the newspapers and ordered the social network to hand over commercial data to evaluate the revenue that the platform earns from the content. OX had 2 months to deliver the data, but did not comply with the decision.
Failure to comply with the decision, according to the French media, demonstrates “thus his invariable desire to evade his legal obligations”.
Alphabet, the parent company of Google, and Meta, the owner of Facebook, are some of the companies that pay for media content reproduced on their social networks. A hearing is scheduled for May 15, 2025, according to the Paris Court spokesperson.
