British King Charles III. will celebrate his 76th birthday on Thursday by opening two food distribution centers as part of his project to reduce waste and support charities helping the hungry. TASR informs about it according to the Reuters news agency.
The monarch, who is an open fighter for the environment and a supporter of a sustainable economy, launched the “Coronation Food Project” last year, which aims to “bridge the gap between food waste and the need for it”.
On Thursday, the King will open the first two food hubs – distribution centers designed to save and circulate tons of surplus food.
Meals from food that would otherwise be thrown away
He will visit one of the centers in south London for a ‘surplus food festival’, where meals will be prepared from food that would otherwise be thrown away, and will also virtually open a second center in the north of England.
They aim to make it easier for food charities such as FareShare and the Felix Project to provide support to people in need, Buckingham Palace said.
The Palace announced that the project has helped save an additional 940 tons of surplus food since the system began operating, which is equivalent to more than 2.2 million servings of food.
Rifle volleys
Charles’ birthday will also be celebrated in the traditional way, with volleys from rifles in the Tower of London and in the capital’s parks. The celebrations take place in the framework of an organizationally demanding week, during which the monarch also attended the London premiere of the film Gladiator II on Wednesday evening.
His wife, Queen Camilla, had to miss the event as she recovers from a chest infection. The official obligations of the monarch himself are still carefully monitored by his medical team, as Karol III. continues to treat cancer.
