The Minister of Cities, Jader Barbalho Filho, said this Thursday (14) that the Minha Casa Minha Vida program could reach 2.3 million units built by the end of 2026 depending on the current pace. The current target, he recalled, is 2 million units contracted by the end of 2026.
“We have already exceeded half of the target for 2026, until the day before yesterday we had 1.135 million new units contracted, in addition to the resumption of works that had been suspended. And this target of 2 million must be exceeded. We believe we can reach 2.3 million”, said the minister this Thursday.
He spoke to journalists in Rio de Janeiro, at a G20 event.
Jader recalled that the program has been one of the main drivers of civil construction in Brazil and that it will continue to be so because there is still a housing deficit in Brazil of between 6 and 7 million housing units.
Budget cut
Asked if the spending cut studied by the federal government could affect the Cities portfolio, Jader Filho said that this discussion has not yet reached him, but that, if it is “imperative” for the government, the ministry will make its “contribution”. He said that the department’s accounts are “adjusted”.
“We understand that the ministry’s accounts are well adjusted. In our understanding, there is currently no fat within the Ministry of Cities, so to speak, that can be put into this (spending cuts). But I think that we, as a government, have to be united in the process of signaling to Brazil that President Lula’s government has responsibility for public accounts”, said the minister.
