The miniseries adaptation “Hilda Hurricane” (1998) in the form of orchestra arrives in the City of Arts, Rio de Janeiro, on the day November 24th.
After seasons in São Paulo and Belo Horizonte, the Ouro Preto Orchestra arrives in the capital of Rio with the adaptation of the novel by Roberto Drummond, which also originated the 1990s.
Under the direction of Maestro Rodrigo Toffolo, the production aims to capture the intensity of feelings and the complexity of the dilemmas of the character who challenged the social conventions of a conservative woman from Belo Horizonte in the 60s.
With original music by Tim Rescala and stage direction by Julliano Mendes, “Hilda Furacão, a Ópera” celebrates the richness of Brazilian culture, in a production sung in Portuguese. Divided into two acts, the show explores the ethical, social and religious dilemmas of an era.
The cast includes Brazilian opera singers: Carla Rizzi plays Hilda and Jabez Lima plays Frei Malthus; Marília Vargas is Loló Ventura, while Marcelo Coutinho plays Nelson Sarmento; Johnny França is Aramel and Fernando Portari represents the narrator and author Roberto Drummond.
Mezzo-soprano Carla Rizzi, who gives life to the protagonist, has a career in the Brazilian operatic scene and has experience as an actress, lending the character the dramatic strength she demands.
The singer repeats the partnership with Orquestra Ouro Preto, whose last chapter had been the successful production, “a Ópera”, as well as Jabez Lima.
“Hilda has everything we look for in a libretto, from an operatic point of view, to bring a story to the stage. It is rich in terms of conflicts, reflections, dramaturgy, this balance between drama and comedic moments”, explains maestro Rodrigo Toffolo.
“Furthermore, Hilda is a very important female character in our literature, who carries strong reflections on freedom, social impositions and on charting her own destiny. All of this makes her a perfect protagonist for this cycle of operas that the Ouro Preto Orchestra has been developing”, he added.
