The first military police officers who arrived at Francisco Wanderley Luiz’s car managed to put out the flames coming from the vehicle. They used fire extinguishers borrowed by firefighters from the Chamber of Deputies.

Luiz’s car was parked in Annex 4 of the Chamber. He died after an explosion in front of the Federal Supreme Court (STF). Inside the trunk of the vehicle, there were fireworks, gunpowder and bricks.

According to Sergeant Santos, from the Dog Police Battalion (BPCães), if the devices had been activated “as he wanted, shrapnel would have been scattered everywhere”. “These shrapnel, upon deflagration, would become a kind of razor, injuring everyone nearby.”

The police, according to Santos, were patrolling the area when they saw smoke in the car. In addition to putting out the fire, he and Sergeants Pinho and Ronaldo acted to remove people from the fire. They isolated the place.

“Thank God we were able to put out (the flames) and remove everyone from the scene safely. The priority was to protect all the citizens who were there”, said Santos.
