Sebastião Bugalho says that the President of the Spanish government uses the loss of lives to gain political capital and accuses Pedro Sánchez of being the Iberian Viktor Orbán.
Portuguese MEP Sebastião Bugalho harshly criticized the president of the Spanish government, Pedro Sánchez, during this afternoon’s plenary session of the European Parliament, which discussed the recent floods in Spain.
In his intervention, Bugalho described the events in Spain not only as a natural catastrophe, but also as a “democratic catastrophe”. He criticized Sánchez’s stance, which, according to the PSD MEP, conditions aid to autonomous communities on the approval of their budgets by the opposition, putting the lives of many citizens at risk, especially in the Valencia region.
The MEP compared Pedro Sánchez’s attitude to that of Viktor Orbán, the Hungarian authoritarian leader, noting that the Spanish president has become an “Iberian Orbán”.
Two weeks after cleaning and reconstruction work continues. The number of confirmed deaths in the floods rose yesterday to 215, while the number of missing people decreased to 17, six fewer than on Monday, Spanish authorities said.
