Despite the current crisis, the German automotive industry continues to suffer from an acute shortage of qualified labor. On average, there were approximately 10,300 vacant positions in the industry each month from July 2023 to June 2024. TASR informs about this based on the report of the DPA agency, which on Wednesday referred to the data of the Cologne Institute for Economic Research (IW).

“Jobs remain vacant despite turbulent economic times,” said study author Jurek Tiedemann, who said demand for skilled labor remains high due to changing mobility and new technologies. “The industry urgently needs qualified workers for the digital and ecological transformation,” he emphasized. Business economists, computer scientists and engineers are particularly in demand, Tiedemann explained.

So far, according to researchers, the decline in car production has had almost no effect on employment. Although almost 27% fewer cars were produced in Germany in 2023 than in 2014, the number of employees in the industry remained largely stable. At the level of 767,000 in 2023, it was even 7% higher than in 2014, with only a minimal decrease from the maximum recorded in 2019.
